Brief History
Gondar Science Center is the brainchild of Mr. Mark Ian Gelfand and implemented by
American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. Mr. Gelfand has launched similar
projects such as FOKA in Debrezeit (Bishoftu), Mekele and other parts of Ethiopia.
The center has been launched last January 2014 and has offered free classes to
160 Grades 7-12 students around the city during its pilot program. Classes on
Electronics, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Mechanics and
Optics has been opened. This summer (July-September), another 300 students will
benefit the program to enrich their education on these four core subjects. Plan of
subject expansion in the future includes Natural Sciences, Chemistry and Arts.
Key Strategies
Partnership formation, development of intensive and enriched programs, fostering student competition in Science and Engineering, networking with similar institutions in Ethiopia and Africa.
Proposed Interim Structure
For the coming two years, the center will be supported by Mr. Mark Ian Gelfand. This period is regarded as the project period. Thereafter, the government is expected to take over the center.
